The Battle of Khanwa was fought at Khanwa which is 60 km west of Agra on March 16, 1527. It was fought between the invading Timurid forces of Babur and the Rajput confederacy led by Rana Sanga for suprermacy of Northern India. The battle was a major event in Medieval Indian history although Timurids won at Panipat but at the time, the sultanate at Delhi was a spent force that was long crumbling. To the contrary Mewar kingdom, under the able rule of Rana Sanga, had turned into one of the strongest powers of northern India. Therefore the battle was among the most decisive battles in the Mughal conquest of northern India.

It was among the earliest battles in Northern India where gunpowder was used to a great extent. The battle resulted in heavy casualties for both Timurids and Rajputs. However, at crucial moment of the battle Rana Sanga was hit with an arrow and fell unconscious and was removed from battlefield in unconscious state by Prithviraj Kachwaha of Amber who himself got badly injured leading the vanguard. Taking advantage, the Timurids stepped up their attacks and soon the Rajput force began to wane.

The Timurids won the day to celebrate their monumental victory, Babur built a victory tower of Hindu skulls. Since Rana Sanga's army was mostly non-Muslim, Babur used religious connotation by referring to his army as Army of Islam and later assumed the title of Ghazi or a Holy warrior.

In the battle, almost all Rajput clans lost one of their royalty (princes), According to historian R.S Sharma, the battle ended the Rajput supremacy which Rana Sanga established in last decade and which was an eyesore to all Muslims of North India.
