About Cachar College
ACHAR COLLEGE is a premier institute of higher learning in south Assam. Established in 1960 and affiliated under 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act, 1956 this college offers both HS and UG Programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce. With over two thousand intake capacity and excellent backing of the on campus support services this provincialised college under the Government of Assam is the natural destination for the students from all the three districts of Barak Valley of Assam and the neighbouring states of Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Located in the heart of the city of Silchar on around 6 acre of land area Cachar College has sixteen departments, seventy faculty members drawn from the best pool of the country and over thirty non-teaching support staff always ready to facilitate the academics.
Cachar College has a chequered past. In the early sixties of the last century, the then prevailing historical realities called for expansion of the scope of higher education in the Valley. At that juncture some leading citizens and academicians of Silchar mooted the idea of opening a college in the town. Accordingly, the idea was given a final shape in a meeting held on 25 April 1960 in the Sramik Kalyan Office. The process culminated in the birth of Cachar College on 20 June, 1960.
The next year the College obtained Pre-university level permanent affiliation for Arts and Commerce from Gauhati University. The same year the College, initially located in Narsing High School premises, was shifted to its present site. And close to that the construction of the College building got underway with joint grants from the Union Relief & Rehabilitation Ministry and the Govt. of Assam.
In 1966 Assam Govt. brought the College under the system of Deficit Grants-in- Aid. In 1981-82 academic session, the Science wing of the College was opened. And the wing received Govt. approval for Grants-in-Aid in 1990.
Consequent on the inception of Assam University in 1994 and as per the new official arrangements, the Degree programmes of the college, hitherto affiliated to Gauhati University, came to be affiliated to the former.
