1931 ൽ തമിഴ് നാട്ടിലെ രാമേശ്വരത്ത് നിരക്ഷരൻ ആയ ഒരു സാധാരണ ബോട്ട് ഉടമയുടെ മകനായി ജനിച്ചു. രാമേശ്വരത്തിലെ ചെറിയ മസ്ജിദിലെ ഇമാം ആയിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഉപ്പ.ഇതിൽ ആദ്ദേഹം വ്യക്തി തലത്തിലും ഔദ്യോഗിക തലത്തിലും അനുഭവിച്ച തിരിച്ചടികളും അവയെ എല്ലാം വിജയകരമായി തരണം ചെയ്തതിനെ കുറിച്ചും പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നു. ആ യാത്രകളിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം നടന്ന പല പ്രഗല്ഭരെയും , ഇന്ന് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ വളരെ പ്രശസ്തമായ "അഗ്നി", "പൃഥ്‌വി", "ത്രിശൂൽ", "നാഗ്" എന്നീ മിസൈലുകളുടെ ഉത്ഭവത്തെ കുറിച്ചും അത് ലോക രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ ഒരു മിസൈൽ ശാക്തിക രാജ്യം ആയി ഇന്ത്യ മാറിയതിനെ കുറിച്ചും വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നു.

പുസ്തകം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് കലാമിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ബാല്യ കാലത്തെ വിശദീകരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടാണ് . തുടക്കത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തുകയും തന്റെ ജന്മസ്ഥലമായ രാമേശ്വരം പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തുവാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ബാല്യത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ പിതാവായ ജൈനുലബ്ദീന്റെ വലിയ ആരാധകനായിരുന്നു.അയിഷാമ്മ എന്നായിരുന്നു അമ്മയുടെ പേര്. രാമേശ്വരം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുഖ്യ പുരോഹിതൻ ആയിരുന്ന പക്ഷി ലക്ഷ്മണ ശാസ്ത്രികൾ ആയിരുന്നു ജൈനുലബ്ദീന്റെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്. തന്റെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തും, പതിനഞ്ചു വയസ്സ് മൂത്തതും ആയിരുന്ന അഹ്മദ് ജാലാലുദീൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സ്വാധീനിച്ചിരുന്നു . ഇവർ ആത്മീയ കാര്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചു സംവദിച്ചിരുന്നതായി അദ്ദേഹം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യ അധ്യായങ്ങളുടെ അവസാന ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ കലാം തന്റെ ബന്ധുവായിരുന്ന ഷംസുദീൻ , എല്ലാ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെയും ഒരു പോലെ കണ്ടിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട അധ്യാപകർ എന്നിവരെയും ഓർക്കുന്നു.ഇതിനെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി തന്റെ സ്കൂളിലെ ഒരു സംഭവം ഇവിടെ വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു: "തന്റെ സ്കൂളിലെ ഒരുപുതിയ അധ്യാപകനായ രാമേശ്വരം ശാസ്ത്രിയ്ക്കു ഒരു മുസ്ലീം ബാലൻ ഒരു ഹൈന്ദവ പുരോഹിതന്റെ മകന്റെ അരികിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്നത് രസിച്ചില്ല. അദ്ദേഹം കലാമിനോട് പിൻ ബെഞ്ചിൽ ഇരിക്കാൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു, ഈ സംഭവം കലാമിന് മാനസികമായി വിഷമം ഉണ്ടാക്കി. ഇതറിഞ്ഞ ലക്ഷ്മണ ശാസ്ത്രികൾ ആ അധ്യാപകനെ ശകാരിക്കുകയും , ഞങ്ങളുടെ സാന്നിധ്യത്തിൽ തന്നെ അദ്ധ്യാപകനോട്,സാമൂഹ്യ അസമത്വത്തിന്റെ വിഷം പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കരുതെന്നും നിഷ്കളങ്കരായ കുട്ടികളുടെ മനസ്സിൽ വർഗീയ അസഹിഷ്ണുത നിറയ്കരുത് എന്നും ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു". രാമേശ്വരം എലിമെൻററി സ്കൂൾ, ഷ്വാർട്സ് ഹൈസ്കൂൾ, രാമേശ്വരം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ അദ്ദേഹം സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി.

1950-ൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദ പഠനത്തിനായി സെന്റ് ജോസഫ് കോളേജ്, ട്രിച്ചിയിൽ ചേർന്നു.അതിനു ശേഷം മദ്രാസ് ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ടെക്നോളജിയിൽ (MIT) അദ്ദേഹം അപേക്ഷിച്ചു.എംഐടി കോഴ്സിനായി അത്രയും പണം ചെലവഴിക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനോ, കുടുംബത്തിനോ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നില്ല. പക്ഷെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സഹോദരി സുഹറ ഈ ലക്‌ഷ്യം നിറവേറ്റുന്നതിനായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിനൊപ്പം നിന്നു. എയ്റോനോട്ടിക്കൽ എൻജിനീയറിംഗിലെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ശാഖയിൽ പഠനം നടത്തുക എന്ന വ്യക്തമായ ലക്‌ഷ്യം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.അദ്ദേഹം പലതരം ആളുകളുമായി ആശയവിനിമയം നടത്താൻ എപ്പോഴും ശ്രമിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.എം.ഐ.ടി.യിലെ അദ്ധ്യാപകരായ പ്രൊഫ. സ്പെന്ദർ, പ്രൊഫ. കൽ പാണ്ഡാലായ്, പ്രൊഫ. നാരൻസിങ്ങലു റാവു എന്നിവർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചിന്തകൾ രൂപീകരിക്കുന്നതിൽ പ്രധാന പങ്കു വഹിച്ചതായി അദ്ദേഹം ഓർക്കുന്നു.അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിൽക്കാല ജീവിതത്തിൽ വലിയ സ്വാധീനം ചെലുത്തിയ എം.ഐ.ടി യിലെ അവസാന വര്ഷം പരിവർത്തനത്തിനായുള്ള ഒരു വർഷമായി അദ്ദേഹം കണക്കാക്കുന്നു.എം.ഐ.ടിയിൽ നിന്ന്, ബാംഗ്ലൂരിൽ ഒരു പരിശീലകനായി ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാൻ എയ്റോനോട്ടിക്സ് ലിമിറ്റഡ് (HAL) യിൽ ചേർന്നു.അവിടെ എൻജിനീയറിങ്ങ് പുനരുദ്ധാരണ സംഘത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.റേഡിയൽ എൻജിൻ കം ഡ്രം ഓപ്പറേഷനിൽ അവിടെ നിന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പരിശീലനം സിദ്ധിച്ചു.എന്നാൽ ഫിസിക്കൽ ഫിറ്റ്നസ് നിലവാരത്തിൽ വിജയിക്കാത്തത് കാരണം അദ്ദേഹം എയർ ഫോഴ്സിൽ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നില്ല. പിന്നീട് അദ്ദേഹം ഡിടിപി, പിസി (എയർ) എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ സീനിയർ സയന്റിഫിക് അസിസ്റ്റന്റായി 250 രൂപമാസ ശമ്പളത്തിൽ നിയമിതനായി.

He was born in 1931 in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, the son of an illiterate boat owner. His deputy was the Imam of a small mosque in Rameshwaram. Many of the experts who accompanied him on those voyages describe the origin of the "Agni", "Prithvi", "Trishul" and "Nag" missiles, which are very popular in India today, and how India has become one of the world's leading missile powers.

The book begins by describing Kalam's childhood. Initially he introduces his family and tries to introduce him to his hometown Rameshwaram. As a child, he was a big fan of his father Zainullahdeen. His mother's name was Aishamma. Jainulabdeen's close friend was Pakshi Lakshmana Sastri, the chief priest of the Rameshwaram temple. He was influenced by his close friend and fifteen-year-old Ahmad Jalaluddin. He records that they talked about spiritual matters. In the last chapters of the first chapter, Kalam recalls his cousin Shamsuddin and his favorite teachers who treated all students as equals. Asked to sit on the bench, Kalam said he was "mentally disturbed by the incident." He completed his schooling at Rameshwaram Elementary School, Schwartz High School and Rameshwaram.

In 1950, he joined St. Joseph's College, Trichy for postgraduate studies. After that, he applied to the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). But his sister Suhara stood by him to achieve this goal. He had a clear goal in mind to study a particular branch of aeronautical engineering. He was always trying to interact with a wide variety of people. Spender, prof. Kal Pandalai, prof. He recalls that Narsingh Rao and Rao played a key role in shaping his thinking. There he worked as part of the engineering restoration team. From there he trained in radial engine cum drum operation. However, he was not selected in the Air Force because he did not succeed in the physical fitness level.
