1966 ൽ മലയാറ്റൂർ രാമകൃഷ്ണൻ എഴുതിയ ഒരു മലയാളം അർദ്ധ ആത്മകഥാ നോവലാണ് വെരുകൽ (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്: വേരുകൾ). അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച കൃതികളിലൊന്നായി ഇത് പരക്കെ അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. 1967 ലെ കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് നേടി.

കേരളത്തിൽ സ്ഥിരതാമസമാക്കിയ തമിഴ് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന അയ്യരുടെ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ കഥയാണ് വെരുകൽ പറയുന്നത്. രഘുവാണ് കഥയിലെ നായകൻ. തന്റെ പൂർവ്വികരുടെ വീട് വിറ്റ് തനിക്കായി ഒരു നഗര മന്ദിരം പണിയാൻ പണം സ്വരൂപിക്കുന്നതിനായി രഘു നിരവധി വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം തന്റെ ജന്മഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയെത്തിയതാണ് നോവൽ തിരിയുന്ന സുപ്രധാന സംഭവം. വിവേകശൂന്യനും ആധിപത്യമുള്ളതുമായ ഭാര്യയുടെ സമ്മർദ്ദത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം മനസ്സില്ലാമനസ്സോടെ ഇത് സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നു. ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ, അവൻ വളർന്ന സഹോദരിമാരെയും മറ്റുള്ളവരെയും കണ്ടുമുട്ടുമ്പോൾ, ഓർമ്മകളുടെ പ്രവാഹം അവനെ കീഴടക്കുന്നു, വസ്തു വിൽക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് അയാൾ പെട്ടെന്ന് മനസ്സ് മാറ്റുന്നു.

Verukal (English: Roots) is a Malayalam semi-autobiographical novel written by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan in 1966. It is widely credited as one of his best works. It won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967.

 

Verukal tells the story of a family of Tamil speaking Iyers who settled in Kerala. Raghu is the protagonist of the story. The pivotal event on which the novel turns is the return of Raghu to his native village after a lapse of several years, to raise money to build a city mansion for himself by selling his ancestral home. He sets about this reluctantly, under pressure from his shrewish and domineering wife. In the village, as he meets his sisters and others among whom he grew up, a flood of memories overwhelms him, and he abruptly changes his mind about selling the property.

 

Increasingly possessed by a yearning to escape the ennui of an indifferent marriage and the empty but comfortable lifestyle of a bureaucrat, Raghu decides to visit the small patch of ancestral property in his native village. The novel moves between the two worlds - the past and the present - with pungent, earthy humour and sharp insights.

K. V. Ramakrishna Iyer, better known by his nom de plume, Malayattoor Ramakrishnan (27 May 1927 – 27 December 1997), was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature, cartoonist, lawyer, judicial magistrate, and Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. He was best known for his novels, short stories and biographical sketches and his works include Yanthram, Verukal, Yakshi and Service Story – Ente IAS Dinangal. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel in 1967. He was also a recipient of the Vayalar Award in 1979.
