1971 ൽ എസ് കെ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട് എഴുതിയ ഒരു മലയാള നോവലാണ് ഒരു ദേശത്തിന്റെ കഥ. 1972 -ൽ കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡും 1980 -ൽ ജ്ഞാനപീഠ അവാർഡും നേടി. ഏകദേശം 55 വർഷത്തെ ഇടവേളയിലാണ് കഥ നടക്കുന്നത്. അതിരനിപ്പാടം മുതൽ വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യ മുതൽ ആഫ്രിക്ക വരെയും സ്വിറ്റ്സർലൻഡ് വരെയുമുള്ള വലിയ ക്യാൻവാസ് ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. ഇത് ഒരു നൊസ്റ്റാൾജിക് നോവലാണ്, ആത്മകഥാപരമായ നിലപാടാണ് വായനക്കാരനെ വളരെയധികം വേട്ടയാടുന്നത്.

 

അതിരനിപ്പാടം ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ശ്രീധരൻ എന്ന ബാലനെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയാണ് കഥ. ഗ്രാമീണരുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ ശ്രീധരന്റെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടുകളിലൂടെയും മറ്റ് കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെയും ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീധരന്റെ ജീവിതകാലം മുഴുവൻ ചുറ്റുമുള്ള ആളുകളുടെ കഥകൾ പറയുന്ന നായകൻ ജനിച്ച ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലാണ് നോവൽ.

Oru Desathinte Katha (English: The Story of a Locale) is a Malayalam novel written by S. K. Pottekkatt in 1971. It sketches the men and women of Athiranippadam, drawing the history of the country while detailing the micro-history of a place. It won the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award in 1972, and the Jnanpith Award in 1980. The story take place in a span of about 55 years. It has a huge canvas of Athiranippadam to North India to Africa and Switzerland. It is a nostalgic novel and an autobiographical stance haunts the reader enormously.

 

The story revolves around a boy named Sreedharan who was a resident of the village of Athiranippadam. The story depicts the life of the villagers through the views of Sreedharan also through the other characters. The novel is set in British India where the protagonist was born and tells the stories of the people around Sreedharan's entire life.

Sankaran Kutty Kunjiraman Pottekkatt (14 March 1913 – 6 August 1982), popularly known as S. K. Pottekkatt, was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature and a politician from Kerala, India. He was also a great traveller among the Keralites, who wrote many travelogues for the people who have been unintroduced to the outside world. He was the author of nearly sixty books which include ten novels, twenty-four collections of short stories, three anthologies of poems, eighteen travelogues, four plays, a collection of essays and a couple of books based on personal reminiscences. he was a recipient of Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel, Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award. His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages.
