1964 ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച എം ടി വാസുദേവൻ നായരുടെ നോവലാണ് മഞ്ജു (മിസ്റ്റ്). കുറച്ച് സംഭാഷണങ്ങളും ചുരുങ്ങിയ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുമുള്ള നോവൽ ഒരു സ്കൂൾ അധ്യാപകന്റെ കഥ വിവരിക്കുന്നു. നൈനിറ്റാളിന്റെ പർവതങ്ങളിലും താഴ്‌വരകളിലുമാണ് നോവൽ ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്, അവിടെ ഒരു ബോർഡിംഗ് സ്കൂളിലെ അധ്യാപികയായ വിമല ദേവി തന്റെ അസംതൃപ്തിയുടെ ശീതകാലം അപ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുമെന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷയോടെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. അച്ഛനും അമ്മയും സഹോദരിയും സഹോദരനും അടങ്ങുന്ന ഒരു കുടുംബം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നിട്ടും വിമല അവരിൽ നിന്ന് അകലെയാണ്. അവൾ അവളുടെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ സഹവാസത്തെ വെറുക്കുകയും ഏകാന്തത ആസ്വദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. പുരുഷാധിപത്യ ആധിപത്യത്തിന്റെയും ചൂഷണത്തിന്റെയും പരിസ്ഥിതി-സ്ത്രീവിഷയമായ പ്രമേയം മഞ്ജുവിൽ കൂടുതൽ പ്രാധാന്യം നേടുന്നു, എം.ടി.യുടെ ഒരു സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രത്തിനൊപ്പമുള്ള ഏക നോവൽ. സാധാരണ നോവലായ വള്ളുവനാടൻ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി നോവൽ വേറിട്ടുനിൽക്കുന്നു.

നോവലിന്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം നിർമ്മൽ വർമയുടെ ഒരു ഹിന്ദി കഥ പരിന്ദെ (പക്ഷികൾ, 1956) ന് സമാനമാണ്. എന്നിരുന്നാലും എംടിയും വർമയും ഈ അവകാശവാദങ്ങൾ നിരസിച്ചു. ഇന്ത്യ ടുഡേയ്ക്ക് നൽകിയ അഭിമുഖത്തിൽ എംടി പറഞ്ഞു, 'ഞങ്ങൾ വളരെ അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തുക്കളാണെങ്കിലും വർമയുടെ കഥ വായിച്ചതായി ഓർക്കുന്നില്ല. നൈനിറ്റാൾ സന്ദർശിച്ച് മടങ്ങിയെത്തിയ ഉടനെ ഞാൻ മഞ്ജു എഴുതി. ' എം.ടിയുടെ കലിബറിന്റെ രചയിതാവിനെ കോപ്പിയടി എന്ന് ആരോപിക്കുന്നത് പരിഹാസ്യമാണെന്ന് വർമ്മ തന്നെ പറയുന്നു. 'എന്റെ കഥയുടെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വിവർത്തനം ഹാർപ്പർകോളിൻസ് അഞ്ചോ ആറോ വർഷം മുമ്പ് മാത്രമാണ് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്. MT ഹിന്ദി കൃതികൾ യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ വായിക്കുമെന്ന് ഞാൻ കരുതുന്നില്ല. അതിനാൽ എംടി തന്റെ നോവൽ എഴുതുന്നതിനുമുമ്പ് അത് വായിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന ആരോപണത്തിൽ യാതൊരു കഴമ്പുമില്ല, 'വർമ പറയുന്നു.

Manju (Mist) is a novel by M. T. Vasudevan Nair published in 1964. With few conversations and minimal characters the novel narrates the story of a school teacher. The novel is set in the mountains and valleys of Nainital where Vimala Devi, a teacher in a boarding school, waits in hope for the winter of her discontent to vanish. Despite having a family comprising father, mother, sister and brother, Vimala is kept aloof from them. She hates the company of her family and enjoys solitude. The eco-feminist theme of patriarchal domination and exploitation gains more prominence in Manju, MT's only novel with a female protagonist. The novel stands apart as set in a milieu different from the usual one, the Valluvanadan village.

The plot of the novel is allegedly similar to a Hindi story Parinde (Birds, 1956), by Nirmal Verma. However both MT and Verma have rejected these claims. MT said in an interview with India Today, 'I don't remember having ever read Verma's story although we are very close friends. I wrote Manju immediately after I returned from a visit to Nainital.' Verma himself says it is ridiculous to accuse an author of MT's calibre of plagiarism. 'My story's English translation was published only five or six years ago by HarperCollins. I don't think MT reads Hindi works in original. So there is no substance to the charge that MT had read it before he wrote his novel,' says Verma.

Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair (born 15 July 1933), popularly known as MT, is an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He is a prolific and versatile writer in modern Malayalam literature, and is one of the masters of post-Independence Indian literature. He was born in Kudallur, a small village in the present day Anakkara panchayath in Pattambi Taluk, Palakkad district (Palghat), which was under the Malabar District in the Madras Presidency of the British Raj. He shot into fame at the age of 20 when, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam at World Short Story Competition conducted by The New York Herald Tribune. His debut novel Naalukettu (Ancestral Home- translated to English as The Legacy), written at the age of 23, won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1958. His other novels include Manju (Mist), Kaalam (Time), Asuravithu (The Prodigal Son - translated to English as The Demon Seed) and Randamoozham (The Second Turn). The deep emotional experiences of his early days have gone into the making of MT's novels. Most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture and many of them were path-breaking in the history of Malayalam literature. His three seminal novels on life in the matriarchal family in Kerala are Naalukettu, Asuravithu, and Kaalam. Randamoozham, which retells the story of the Mahabharatha from the point of view of Bhimasena, is widely credited as his masterpiece.
