'യഥാർത്ഥ' കഥ- പാവപ്പെട്ട പാചകക്കാരൻ ഒരു കോടീശ്വരനാകുന്നു എന്നതാണ് ഇതിവൃത്തം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ബാഷർ അതിനെ ഒരു യഥാർത്ഥ കഥ എന്ന് വിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു, അവിടെ സാങ്കൽപ്പിക കഥയ്ക്ക് താഴെ കിടക്കുന്ന സത്യം അദ്ദേഹം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുന്നു. കഥ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് മൂക്ക് സാധാരണയിലും അപ്പുറത്തേക്ക് വളരുന്നു. ജനങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അംഗീകരിക്കാത്തതിനാൽ ഉടൻ തന്നെ ജോലിയിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ലോകമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള ആളുകൾ അവന്റെ മൂക്ക് നിരീക്ഷിക്കാൻ വരുന്നു, അവന്റെ അമ്മയും അവനും പ്രകോപിതനായി പ്രതികരിച്ചു. അവന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ചോ ക്ഷേമത്തെക്കുറിച്ചോ ആരും ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചില്ല; അവനെ സമൂഹത്തിൽ ഒരു ഷോ പീസ് ആക്കി സ്വയം രസിപ്പിക്കാൻ അവർ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. അവന്റെ മൂക്ക് കാണാൻ ആളുകൾ കൈക്കൂലി നൽകാൻ തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ മൂക്കൻ വളരെ വേഗം സമ്പന്നനായി. ഇത് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പ്രശസ്തനാക്കി, താമസിയാതെ സമൂഹത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും സ്വാധീനിച്ച വ്യക്തിയായി. അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കാണാൻ ടെലിവിഷൻ ജീവനക്കാരും ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫർമാരും അഭിമുഖക്കാരും വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കുറച്ച് രാഷ്ട്രീയ പാർട്ടികൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പിന്തുണച്ചു, മറ്റുള്ളവർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തിയെയും അധികാരത്തെയും എതിർത്തു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഓരോ വാക്കും മാധ്യമങ്ങളെയും അതുവഴി സമൂഹത്തെയും സ്വാധീനിച്ചു. സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ വ്യത്യസ്ത സംഭവങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അഭിപ്രായങ്ങൾ ഉച്ചത്തിൽ വിളിച്ചു, പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ എഴുതി, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഗുണങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ഇതിഹാസ കവിതകൾ എഴുതി, സിനിമകളിൽ അഭിനയിച്ചു, ആളുകളെ പ്രീതിപ്പെടുത്താൻ നിരവധി ജോലികൾ ചെയ്തു. ചുരുങ്ങിയ സമയത്തിനുള്ളിൽ, സമൂഹത്തിന് 'നീളമുള്ള മൂക്ക്' എന്ന പേരിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് സർക്കാർ അംഗീകാരം നൽകി. എല്ലാ നാടകങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ജനകീയ സമരത്തിന്റെ നേതാവാക്കി. മറുവശത്ത്, എതിർ കക്ഷികൾ അയാൾക്ക് വ്യാജ മൂക്ക് ഉണ്ടെന്ന് അവകാശപ്പെടുകയും നീണ്ട മൂക്കിലെ സംഘർഷങ്ങളും സ്വാധീനവും തുടരുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവൻ പ്രശസ്തിയും ആരാധനയും നേടി, അവൻ വിലമതിക്കുന്ന ഒന്നും തന്നെയില്ല. ഈ കഥയ്ക്ക് കീഴിൽ, സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ വിഡ്ishിത്തവും യുക്തിരഹിതമായ സാമൂഹിക പെരുമാറ്റവുമാണ് സത്യമെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുന്നു.

ബഷീർ എങ്ങനെയാണ് വിഡ്nessിത്തം നിലനിൽക്കുന്നതെന്നും ചിന്ത എങ്ങനെ ആശയക്കുഴപ്പത്തിലായെന്നും ജനങ്ങളെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട് കഥ അവസാനിക്കുന്നു. അംഗീകാരം നേടാൻ സ്വാധീനിക്കപ്പെട്ടവരെ പിന്തുടരുന്ന പാവപ്പെട്ട ബുദ്ധിശക്തിയോടും അദ്ദേഹം സഹതപിക്കുന്നു. സമൂഹത്തിൽ അധികമൊന്നും ചെയ്യാത്ത, എന്നാൽ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ വിഡ്ishിത്തങ്ങൾ മുതലെടുക്കാൻ മിടുക്കരായ ആളുകളെ അദ്ദേഹം വെളിച്ചത്തു കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു.

The ‘true’ story- The poor cook becomes a millionare is what the plot deals with. Basher begins by calling it a true story, where he points out to the truth lying beneath the fictional story. The story begins with the man whose nose grows too long beyond the ordinary. He is soon thrown out of his job because he is not accepted by the people. People around the world come to observe his nose to which his mother and he respond exasperated. No one cared about his life or his wellbeing; they just wanted to entertain themselves by making him a show piece in the society. Mookken soon becomes rich when people began to offer him bribes to watch his nose. This made him famous and soon the most influenced person of the society. There were television crews, photographers, interviewers, and tourists who had come to watch him. Few Political parties supported him and others opposed his fame and power. His every word influenced the media and thereby the society. He commented on the different happenings of the society and his opinions were called out loud, books were written about him, epic poems were written about his qualities, he acted in movies and performed numerous tasks to please the people. In no time, he was awarded by the government for being ‘the long nose one’ to the society. In spite of all the drama he was made the leader of the people’s struggle. On the other hand, the opposite parties claimed him to have a fake nose and the conflicts and influence on the long nosed one went on and on. He won fame and adoration, nothing of what he was worth. Beneath this story, he points out at the truth being the foolishness and irrational societal behaviour of the community.

The story ends by Basheer questioning the masses on how foolishness has been perpetuated and how thought has been confused. He also sympathises with the poor intellects that follow the influenced ones to gain recognition. He brings to limelight people who have not done much in the society but have been smart enough to take advantage of the society’s foolishness.


About the Author Basheer


Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (21 January 1908 – 5 July 1994), also known as Beypore Sulthan, was an Indian independence activist and writer of Malayalam literature . He was a writer, humanist, freedom fighter, novelist and short story writer, noted for his path-breaking, down-to-earth style of writing that made him equally popular among literary critics as well as the common man. His notable works include Balyakalasakhi, Shabdangal, Pathummayude Aadu, Mathilukal, Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu, Janmadinam and Anargha Nimisham and the translations of his works into other languages have earned him worldwide acclaim. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 1982. He was also a recipient of the Sahitya Academy Fellowship, Kerala Sahitya Academy Fellowship, and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story.
