1958 -ൽ ഉറൂബ് (പി. സി. കുട്ടികൃഷ്ണൻ) എഴുതിയ ഒരു മലയാള നോവലാണ് സുന്ദരികളും സുന്ദരന്മാരും (സുന്ദരവും സുന്ദരനും). ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനൊപ്പം സുന്ദരികളും സുന്ദരൻമാരും ഉറൂബിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച കൃതികളായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, കൂടാതെ അവ മലയാളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച നോവലുകളിൽ ഇടം നേടി.

1960 -ൽ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ സാഹിത്യ അവാർഡായ കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് സുന്ദരികളും സുന്ദരൻമാരും നേടി. സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യാനന്തരം ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച പ്രവർത്തനത്തിന് കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി നൽകുന്ന പ്രത്യേക പുരസ്കാരമായ 1973 -ൽ ആശാൻ സെന്റിനറി അവാർഡും ലഭിച്ചു.

Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum (The Beautiful and the Handsome) is a 1958 Malayalam novel written by Uroob (P. C. Kuttikrishnan). Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum along with Ummachu are considered the best works by Uroob and are ranked among the finest novels in Malayalam.

 

The novel has about thirty characters belonging to three generations of eight families belonging to Malabar during the end of the First World War, when the famous Moplah rebellion broke out in Kerala.

 

Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum was serialised in Mathrubhumi Weekly in 1954 and was published as a book in 1958. It was translated into English by Susila Mishra under the title The Beautiful and the Handsome. The original title Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum can be literally transliterated as Men and Women of Charm.

 

Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, India's most prestigious literary award, in 1960. It also got the Asan Centenary Award in 1973, a special award given by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi for the most outstanding work since Independence.

 


About the Author Basheer


Parutholli Chalappurathu Kuttikrishnan, popularly known by his pen name Uroob (Malayalam: ഉറൂബ്; 1915 – 1979) was an Indian writer of Malayalam literature. Along with Basheer, Thakazhi, Kesavadev, and Pottekkatt, Uroob was counted among the progressive writers in Malayalam during the twentieth century. He was known for his novels such as Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum and Ummachu, short stories like Rachiyamma and the screenplays of a number of Malayalam films including Neelakuyil, the first Malayalam feature film to receive the National Film Award. He was a recipient of several honours including Kendra Sahithya Academy Award and the inaugural Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel.
