വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ് ബഷീറിന്റെ ലോകപ്രശസ്ത മൂക്ക് സമകാലിക സമൂഹത്തെയും അതിന്റെ പിന്നിലെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സംഭവങ്ങളെയും ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യ കഥയാണ്. ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ പദവിയും മഹത്വവും മാത്രം ആരാധിക്കുന്ന സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ സംഘത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമായി കഥയെ എടുത്തേക്കാം, കഴിഞ്ഞ കാലങ്ങളിൽ അയാൾ ജീവിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി നടന്ന കഠിനമായ വഴികളിലൂടെയല്ല, ആ ഉയരങ്ങൾ നേടിയ വഴികളിലൂടെയും .

കഥയിലെ നായകൻ ഒരു വിഡ്ishിയായ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരനാണ്, ഒരു സമ്പന്നന്റെ വീട്ടിൽ ഒരു ഉപജീവനത്തിനായി പാചകക്കാരനായി ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നു. അയാൾക്ക് സംതൃപ്തിയും ഭക്ഷണവും ശ്വസിക്കുന്നതുമല്ലാതെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഗൗരവത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഒട്ടും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്നില്ല! വിചിത്രമായത് അവന്റെ 24 -ആം വയസ്സിൽ സംഭവിച്ചു -അവന്റെ മൂക്ക് വളരാൻ തുടങ്ങി! അതിന്റെ നീളം വളർന്നു, ഒടുവിൽ, അവന്റെ വായയും താടിയും കടന്ന് അവന്റെ നാഭിയിൽ എത്തി, പിന്നെ കൂടുതൽ വളരുന്നത് നിർത്തി. ആളുകൾ വീടിനു മുന്നിൽ തിങ്ങിനിറഞ്ഞു, പതിവില്ലാത്തവരെ നോക്കി മൂക്കുത്തി കുടിലിന് മുന്നിൽ ക്യൂ നിന്നു, പക്ഷേ ഈ ഭയാനകമായ സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ ആരും സഹതപിക്കുകയോ സഹായിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്തില്ല. അവസാനം അയാൾ ദേഷ്യപ്പെടുകയും അമ്മയോട് വാതിൽ അടയ്ക്കാൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇപ്പോൾ ആൾക്കൂട്ടം അമ്മയ്ക്ക് കൈക്കൂലി നൽകി വസ്തു പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കുക

സമൂഹം പോവേരിയിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ്. അമ്മയും മകനും പണം സമ്പാദിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി, ഏതാനും ദിവസങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ അവർ രാജ്യമെമ്പാടുമുള്ള സമ്പന്നരിൽ ഏറ്റവും ധനികരായി സ്വയം ആദരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു!

ആ മനുഷ്യൻ പ്രശസ്തനായപ്പോൾ, രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാർ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ 'പിടിക്കാൻ' ഗൂiാലോചനകൾ നടത്തി. ഭരണകക്ഷി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഒരു സ്ഥാനപ്പേരും സ്വർണ്ണ മെഡലും നൽകി വിശ്വസ്തനാക്കി. പ്രസിഡന്റും സമൂഹത്തിലെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാനത്തെ ബഹുമാനിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് പ്രതിപക്ഷ പാർട്ടി പ്രക്ഷോഭവും അക്രമവും ആരംഭിച്ചു & കലാപം, മൂക്ക് റബ്ബർ കൊണ്ട് നിർമ്മിച്ച കപടമാണെന്ന ധാരണയിൽ! വിദഗ്ദ്ധ ഡോക്ടർമാരുടെ സംഘം മൂക്ക് പരിശോധിക്കാൻ ആളെ പോലീസ് അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു. എന്തായാലും മൂക്ക് യഥാർത്ഥമാണെന്ന് തെളിഞ്ഞു പ്രസിഡന്റിന്റെ പാർലമെന്റ് അംഗമായി അദ്ദേഹം നാമനിർദ്ദേശം ചെയ്തു.എന്നാൽ പ്രതിപക്ഷ പാർട്ടികൾ അത് അംഗീകരിച്ചില്ല. അവർ ഒരു ഐക്യമുന്നണി രൂപീകരിക്കുകയും അവരുടെ പോരാട്ടം തുടരുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ഒടുവിൽ, യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ സംഭവിച്ചത്, വിഡ്olsികളായി ഒരു കൂട്ടം ആളുകളുടെ 'കിരീടധാരണം' ആയിരുന്നു! അത് പാചകക്കാരനല്ല, ഭരണകക്ഷികളോ പ്രതിപക്ഷ പാർട്ടികളോ വിഡ്olsികളാക്കിയില്ല. പിന്നെ ആരാണ് ???

പാവപ്പെട്ട പൗരൻമാരും രാജ്യത്തെ മുഴുവൻ ബുദ്ധിജീവികളും മുഴുവൻ നാടകം സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചവരല്ലാതെ മറ്റാരുമല്ല! പക്ഷേ അറിയുക, അവർക്കും ഈ നാടകം മനസ്സിലായില്ല, കാരണം നമുക്കും നമ്മുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ ജീവിതത്തിൽ അത് മനസ്സിലാകുന്നില്ല !!!!!

The world-renowned nose' by vaikkom muhammed basheer is a homorous story,a satire on the contemporary society and the political incidents behind it.The story seems like to be an unimaginable tale,but the characters and the 'long nose' referred in the story may be taken as a symbol of those gang of society who worships just the status and the glory of a person, not the hard ways through which he walked in the past to earn a living as well as the ways through which he achieved those heights.

The hero of the story is a foolish young man,who works as a cook in a rich man's house to earn a living.He is not at all careful about the seriousness of life,except having food to his satisfaction and inhaling stuff!But something strange happened at his 24th age -His nose started to grow!It grew in length and finally,passed his mouth&chin and reached his navel & then stopped growing any more.People started to crowd before the house and stared and amazed upon the extra-ordinary nose!As it became a nuisance for the house owner,the cook was dismissed from the job.He sat in his hut without having enough food for days and a single buck to buy even a pinch of stuff for his mental relief.Still the crowd queued before the hut,but no one sympathised or lent a helping hand in this dreadful situation.At last he became angry & asked his mother to shut the door.Now the crowd bribed his mother & and she was forced to place his son as an exhibit property

before the society to escape from povery.Mother & son began to get money and within several days they were honoured by themselves as the richest among the rich across the country!

As the man became famous,politicians hatched conspiracies to 'capture' him.The ruling party made him his loyal by giving him a title and a gold medal.The president too honoured his position in the society.Then the opposition party started agitation,violence & riots,on the pretext that the nose was a pseudo made of rubber!The man was arrested by the police under the influence to examine the nose by the gang of expert doctors.Any way,the nose was proved to be real and this led to his nomination as the Member of Parliament by the president.But the opposition parties didn't agreed to that.They formed a United Front and continued their struggle.

At last,actually,what happened was the 'crowning 'of a gang of people as the fools!It was not the cook,neither the ruling parties nor the opposition parties who were made fools.Then who???

No one else ,than the poor citizens& the intellectuals of the country upon whom the whole drama were organised!But know,they didn't realised this drama as we too don't understand the same in our real life!!!!!

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (21 January 1908 – 5 July 1994), also known as Beypore Sulthan, was an Indian independence activist and writer of Malayalam literature . He was a writer, humanist, freedom fighter, novelist and short story writer, noted for his path-breaking, down-to-earth style of writing that made him equally popular among literary critics as well as the common man. His notable works include Balyakalasakhi, Shabdangal, Pathummayude Aadu, Mathilukal, Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu, Janmadinam and Anargha Nimisham and the translations of his works into other languages have earned him worldwide acclaim. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri in 1982. He was also a recipient of the Sahitya Academy Fellowship, Kerala Sahitya Academy Fellowship, and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story.
