'ദി ലാസ്റ്റ് ലീഫ്' എന്നത് 1907 -ലെ ട്രിംഡ് ലാമ്പും മറ്റ് കഥകളും എന്ന ശേഖരത്തിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഒ.ഹെൻറിയുടെ ഒരു ചെറുകഥയാണ്. 1905 ഒക്ടോബർ 15 ന് ന്യൂയോർക്ക് ലോകത്താണ് കഥ ആദ്യമായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടത്.

ന്യുമോണിയ പകർച്ചവ്യാധിയുടെ സമയത്ത് ഗ്രീൻവിച്ച് ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് കഥ നടക്കുന്നത്. ന്യൂമോണിയ ബാധിച്ച് അയൽവാസിയായ ഒരു യുവ കലാകാരിയുടെ ജീവൻ രക്ഷിക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു പഴയ കലാകാരിയുടെ ജീവൻ നിലനിർത്താനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹം നൽകി അവളുടെ കഥ പറയുന്നു. അവളുടെ ജനാലയിലൂടെ അവൾക്ക് ഒരു പഴയ ഐവി ഇഴജന്തു (സമീപത്തെ മതിലിൽ വളരുന്നു) കാണാൻ കഴിയും, ശരത്കാലം ശീതകാലം ആകുമ്പോൾ ക്രമേണ ഇലകൾ വീഴുന്നു, അവസാന ഇല വീഴുമ്പോൾ അവൾ മരിക്കുമെന്ന ചിന്ത അവൾ മനസ്സിൽ എടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇലകൾ ദിവസം തോറും വീഴുന്നു, പക്ഷേ അവസാനത്തെ ഒറ്റ ഇല നിരവധി ദിവസം നിലനിൽക്കും. രോഗിയായ സ്ത്രീയുടെ ആരോഗ്യം വേഗത്തിൽ വീണ്ടെടുക്കുന്നു. കഥയുടെ അവസാനം, ഒരു മാസ്റ്റർപീസ് പെയിന്റിംഗ് നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ എപ്പോഴും ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ഒരിക്കലും വിജയിക്കാത്ത പഴയ കലാകാരൻ, രാത്രി മുഴുവൻ മതിലിൽ ഒരു ഇല വരയ്ക്കാൻ ഗണ്യമായ സമയം ചെലവഴിച്ചുവെന്ന് ഞങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ, പഴയ ആർട്ടിസ്റ്റ് തന്നെ നനഞ്ഞും തണുപ്പിലും ആയിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ന്യുമോണിയ ബാധിച്ച് മരിച്ചു.

'The Last Leaf' is a short story by O. Henry published in his 1907 collection The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories. The story first appeared on October 15, 1905, in the New York World.

The story is set in Greenwich Village during a pneumonia epidemic. It tells the story of an old artist who saves the life of a young neighbouring artist, dying of pneumonia, by giving her the will to live. Through her window she can see an old ivy creeper (growing on a nearby wall), gradually shedding its leaves as autumn turns into winter, and she has taken the thought into her head that she will die when the last leaf falls. The leaves fall day by day, but the last lone leaf stays on for several days. The ill woman's health quickly recovers. At the story's end, we learn that the old artist, who always wanted to produce a masterpiece painting but had never had any success, spent considerable time painting with great realism a leaf on the wall for the whole night. Furthermore, the old artist himself dies of pneumonia contracted while being out in the wet and cold.


About the Author Basheer


William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910), better known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American short story writer.

Porter was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He moved to Texas in 1882, where he met his wife, Athol Estes, with whom he had two children. In 1902, after the death of his wife, Porter moved to New York, where he soon remarried. It was while he was in New York that Porter's most intensive writing period occurred, with Porter writing 381 short stories.

Porter's works include 'The Gift of the Magi', 'The Duplicity of Hargraves', and 'The Ransom of Red Chief'. His stories are known for their surprise endings and witty narration. Porter also wrote poetry and non-fiction.

Porter's legacy includes the O. Henry Award, an annual prize awarded to outstanding short stories.
